Michael Bates

Canadian born (NYC residing) bassist Michael Bates newest release will not disappoint any jazz lover! (Not a bad way to start a review, eh?). Released on Trumpeter Dave Douglas’ Green Leaf Music label, this CD features some very engaging compositions, wonderfully propulsive bass work and some very exploratory playing by all. Any fan of John Zorn’s “Masada” releases or Drew Gress (see previous CD reviews) will surely find much to love here. I can hear a true love and understanding of both classical composers and out-jazz luminaries in his writing. Although, this music is much more listen-able and enjoyable to me than many of his acknowledged influences. There is some wonderful contrapuntal interplay happening here and these guys seem to have very big ears and wide open perspectives throughout the performances. Wonderful interplay and very intriguing compositions!
