Meshell Ndegeocello, the iconoclastic, inimitable American musician regarded as one of the greatest bass guitarists alive and the godmother of theNeo-Soul movement, has been named as a special guest professor at Bootsy’s Funk University, the trailblazing online bass guitar academy masterminded and ordained by funk pioneer Bootsy Collins at www.thefunkuniversity.com. Ndegeocello is the latest in a string of high-profile bassists Bootsy has handpicked to impart to F.U. students the inner workings of their musicianship and artistry. Les Claypool, Victor Wooten,Divinity Roxx, John B. Williams, Frankie “Kash” Waddy, Bakithi Kumalo, Billy Bass, Dennis Chambers and T.M. Stevens comprise the current roster of scheduled special guests for year one of the Funk University, which commences on July 1, 2010.
Since her appearance on the world stage alongside John Mellencamp on their 1994 hit remake of Van Morrison‘s “Wild Night”, ten-time Grammy-nominated Meshell Ndegeocello has carved herself a niche as one of the most unique musicians of her generation, from her trademark husky voice to her lyrics, which masterfully blend emotion, politics and spirituality into a worldview all her own. But it is her skill at the bass guitar that makes her an indispensable addition to the Funk University. The first female bassist to grace the cover of Bass Player Magazine, her list of collaborators speaks to the respect her axemanship commands in the highest of musical circles: Rolling Stones, Madonna, Chaka Khan, Billy Preston, Alanis Morrissette, Zap Mama and many more.
Bootsy Collins’ Funk University is an undertaking of a kind the world has never seen before, as the bass icon has assembled the finest bassists and musicians on the planet to join him as he sheds light on the origin and roots of funk and modern music. Under the supervision and direction of Professor Bootsy, Funk University students will obtain new content each day through the ‘online campus’ at The FunkUniversity.com. Lectures on the history and evolution of bass, lessons and exercises on style, rhythm and technique and even gear tutorials are all part of the intensive curriculum designed by Professor Bootsy and executed by his A-list team of special guest professors. Office hours will also be held each week to answer students’ questions. Professor Bootsy will also be judging student track submissions as part of a series of regular school competitions. Bootsy’s Funk University is produced by SceneFour, the notorious L.A. creativity house responsible for projects with Al Gore’s Current TV, MTV-U, Nine Inch Nails, the RZA,Marilyn Manson, The Pixies, and Beck.
