Meet Jaime Vazquez –
Happy Anniversary BMM! It’s a great honor for me to be a part of the BMM Family!
For this special issue I will show you how to tap the clave while your grooving at the same time. Remember that the clave is a repetitive rhythmic pattern that serves as a guide when you’re playing a melody or grooving latin music. For the next several examples, we’re going to tap the notes with both hands at the same time (tap the groove with your left hand and tap the chord tones with your right hand). Coordination will be the big challenge and take care with the length of the notes.
Example 1. Here we have the appropiate pattern for the Brazilian style called Bossa Nova. This basic and repetitive pattern will be used for playing the chord tones with your right hand.
Example 2. This is the intro for Bossa with me, an original theme that I’m playing live. Hear how the clave fits the groove.
Example 3. There are three clave patterns for the Afro-Cuban styles (the son clave, the rumba clave and the 6/8 clave). Here we will be using the son clave 2:3.
Example 4. A basic bass tumbao. Tap this groove with your left hand. Then, tap the son clave 2:3 with the chord tones using your right hand.

Jaime David Vazquez was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and started with classical guitar and music theory lessons at age 16. He entered the Interamerican University to study music education and bought a bass and started gigging with lots of bands, artists and performing in studio sessions. With such a busy schedule, Jaime had to put his studies on hold for a while; when the time was right, he returned to the university but he changed his main instrument from classical guitar to double bass and electric bass.
Jaime loves the low frequencies in music. He believes that the bass is still a young instrument with lots of possibilities that have not been explored enough. He likes everything that grooves but he thinks that the bass is a great lead voice with a great register too. His playing is influenced not only by bass players, but also by other instrumentalists such as guitarists, pianists, woodwind players, etc.
For Jaime, innovation is the key. He is a pioneer, an enthusiastic who loves music and his instrument. He's also a multi-instrumentalist, clinician, composer, arranger, transcriber, studio musician, music educator, freelance and solo artist. He has played in several TV shows, concerts and festivals with artists such as David Bisbal, Gloria Trevi, Rawy, Luis Fonsi, Olga Tañon, Lourdes Robles, Wilkins, Noelia, Shalim, Obey Bermudez, Samuel Hernandez, Tony Vega, Blest; Sheila Romero and Humberto Ramirez and others. Also, he has recorded jingles for TV shows, commercials, etc. An overall bass player currently playing in several musical projects from rock to jazz, studio sessions, clinics, workshops, etc.

Excelente columna, Jaime! Es bastante retador el material q presentas pero ayuda un monton para la sincronizacion de las 2 manos. Lo mejor es trabajar cada mano aparte para luego unirlas… Sigue hacia adelante y exito con la columna!
