Jazz Improvisation With Andrea Fascetti: Ear Training Part 2

HI MY “BASS” FRIENDS!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE POSITIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT EAR TRAINING.

THE EXERCISE I SUGGESTED LAST TIME IS THE FIRST PART OF A SERIES DEDICATED TO IMPROVING OUR “EARS”. PLEASE ADD THIS EXERCISES TO YOUR DAILY SCHEDULE AND AFTER THIS “AURAL” BREAK, WE’LL RESTART USING BEBOP EXERCISES AND WE’LL WORK OVER CHROMATIC APPROACHES.

OK, I’M SURE YOU DID THE EXERCISE ABOUT EAR TRAINING.CONSIDERING THAT THIS IS A PROGRESSIVE WORK ABOUT SOUNDS, DO NOT BE SURPRISED IF THESE EXERCISES ARE VERY SIMPLE; NOT EVERYONE HAS A GREAT “EAR”. I SUGGESTED TO ADVANCED MUSICIANS (WHO HAVE “COOL EARS” AND DON’T NEED THIS WORK), TO START TRANSCRIBING BASS LINES AND SOLOS!

INSTEAD, IF YOU NEED THIS KIND OF TRAINING, I SUGGEST YOU WORK HARD OVER THESE EXERCISES AND I AM SURE THAT YOUR AURAL SKILLS WILL GREATLY IMPROVE.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ADVANTAGES OF A GOOD “EAR” ARE VERY IMPORTANT…. LIKE REPRODUCING AND TRANSCRIBING MELODIES, SOLOS AND CHORD PROGRESSIONS AND INTERACTING FREELY WITH OTHER MUSICIANS.

NOW IT’S TIME FOR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:

I SUGGEST YOU TO TAKE EACH INTERVAL WITHIN AN OCTAVE AND ASSOCIATE IT WITH THE FIRST TWO NOTES OF A MELODY YOU KNOW VERY WELL. THIS MELODY WILL HELP YOU TO REMEMBER WHAT THE INTERVAL SOUNDS LIKE.

HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ear_training) YOU CAN FIND A LIST OF INTERVALS ASSOCIATED TO FAMOUS MELODIES, TAKE A LOOK IF YOU WANT.

I HOPE YOU APPRECIATE THIS SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL EXERCISE….

HAVE A GOOD PRACTICE MY “BASS FRIENDS”.

CIAO!

ANDREA
