INCREASE YOUR SPEED WITH CORRECT PRACTICING PART 2 BY ANDREA FASCETTI

HI, MY “BASS” FRIENDS!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE POSITIVE FEEDBACK ON THE “SPEED” EXERCISES. THE EXERCISE I SUGGESTED LAST TIME IS THE FIRST PART OF A SHORT SERIES DEDICATED TO CORRECT PRACTICING. PLEASE ADD THESE EXERCISES TO YOUR DAILY SCHEDULE UNTIL IT BECOMES SECOND NATURE FOR YOU. AFTER THIS NEW BREAK, WE’LL RESTART USING BEBOP EXERCISES AND WE’LL WORK OVER CHROMATIC APPROACHES.

IN THE LAST LESSON, YOU SAW THAT ALMOST EVERYONE WHO PLAYS AN INSTRUMENT GETS IN THE HABIT OF MAKING MISTAKES DURING HIS PRACTICE TIME. I WAS A CHAMPION IN THIS “SPORT” 🙂 I REMEMBER THAT MY TECNIQUE NEVER IMPROVED UNTIL I STARTED USING THESE TYPES OF EXERCISES. HOWEVER, IT’S NORMAL MAKING MISTAKES… NO PROBLEM! THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT WE CAN IMPROVE!

OBVIOULSY, THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF PRACTICING AND YOU CAN USE THE TECHNIQUES YOU PREFER.

OK. NOW IT’S TIME FOR USUAL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT.

EX 1) FOR VERY FAST TEMPOS, IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOU TEACH YOUR MIND, AND MUSCLES OF THE HANDS TO PLAY FAST. YOU CAN TRY TO INCREASE THE SPEED OF THE NOTES DURING PRACTICE… INCREASE YOUR SPEED UNTIL YOU ARE STILL PLAYING CLEAN. WHEN YOUR PLAYING BECOMES LESS THEN ACCURATE, THAT DETERMINES YOUR MAXIMUM SPEED.

MANY OF US ARE NOT FAST PLAYERS, EVEN IF WE ARE EXPERIENCED PLAYERS, BECAUSE WE ARE NOT FORCING OURSELVES TO PLAY FAST. SO PLEASE, TRY TO PLAY FAST AND YOU’LL DISCOVER THAT YOU CAN PLAY IN A NEW WAY.

EX 2) IF YOU PLAY A DIFFICULT PHRASE AT A FAST TEMPO, PRACTICE IN THIS WAY: IF THE NOTES ARE C D E F G, YOU PLAY CGC GCG CGC GCG CGC ETC. THEN YOU PLAY CDG CDG CDG CDG CDG ETC. THEN PLAY CDEG CDEG CDEG ETC. AND LASTLY PLAY CDEFG CDEFG ETC. NOW TRY TO PLAY FAST. WHAT HAPPENS?

OBVIOUSLY, MOST GREAT BASS PLAYERS DON’T PLAY SO FAST. IT’S NOT SO IMPORTANT TO PLAY FAST… BUT IF YOU DESIRE TO DO SO, THESE EXERCISES CAN HELP YOU TO FIND YOUR WAY. OK?
