Grammy Winning Bassist Juan Alderete Joins LAMA Bass Department as Artist-in-Residence… LAMA College for Music Professionals (LAMA) and Bass Department Chair Jerry Watts Jr. today announced industry veteran and bassist extraordinaire Juan Alderete will join Abe Laboriel Sr. and Lee Sklar as Artists-in-Residence at LAMA, effective immediately. Best known for his years spent with Racer X and Grammy-winning band The Mars Volta, Juan brings his 30-plus years of playing expertise and passion to the students of LAMA, many of whom travel to LAMA from other countries for specialized training from seasoned artists such as Juan.
“Juan is one of the most respected bass players in the industry. His decades of experience and unique ability to connect with our students make him the perfect addition to the LAMA family. We’re absolutely thrilled to have him on board,” says Watts.
Juan is a Los Angeles native who formed his love of music as a teenager. He was exposed to jazz and progressive rock at an early age and became fascinated with bass as he realized it was somewhat of an “underappreciated” instrument. He studied at MI in Los Angeles, where he helped form Racer X with fellow MI guitar student Paul Gilbert. In 2003, he was offered an audition with Mars Volta and has recorded on every album since. Juan has invested in his own musical projects of late including Big Sir and Vato Negro and recently launched the extremely popular website, www.pedalsandeffects.com. He is endorsed by Fender Basses and Behringer.
