Jazz Improvisation with Andrea Fascetti: Chromatic Approaches Part 10

HI MY “BASS FRIENDS” AND COLLEAGUES!

I’M VERY PROUD TO BE HERE AGAIN. BASS MUSICIAN MAGAZINE IS REALLY COOL! GREAT WORK EVERYBODY!

TODAY WE GO ON TO USE THIS TECHNIQUE CALLED CHROMATIC APPROACHES, THAT I LEARNED FROM MY TEACHER CHARLIE BANACOS. I ADAPTED IT TO ELECTRIC BASS USING SOME SIMPLY IDEAS.

ESPECIALLY FOR NEW FOLLOWERS, I LIKE TO BEGIN MY REMINDING READERS WHY  I TALK ABOUT JAZZ IMPROVISATION. THE REASON IS IS THAT IN JAZZ MUSIC YOU FIND ALL OF THE TECHNIQUES THAT ALL GREAT BASS IMPROVISERS ARE USING. OBVIOUSLY, AFTER YOU HAVE LEARNED ALL OF THE TECNHIQUES, YOU CAN PLAY THE KIND OF MUSIC YOU PREFER.

DURING THE LAST LESSON WE WORKED OVER AN 8-BAR LINE USING DIMINISHED CHORDS. CONSIDERING THAT THE LAST THREE CHORDS WE STUDIED (DIMINISHED, MINOR WITH May7th AND SUS 4 CHORDS) ARE VERY DIFFICULT, WE NEED TO PUT THESE LINES IN ACTION LIKE WE DID  WITH THE FIRST 4 CHORDS OF THE SERIES (IN JULY 2013 LESSON).  I THINK THAT  YOU CAN USE IT AS AN EXAMPLE FOR CREATING  YOUR OWN EXERCISES.

I STRONGLY URGE YOU (AND I KNOW THAT I’M VERY BORING 🙂  TO CHECK ALL OF THE PAST LESSONS (CLICK TO VIEW) TO HAVE A WIDE VIEW AND UNDERSTANDING OF THIS WORK.

IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE LAST LESSON, YOU WILL SEE THAT I USE A LINE WITHOUT RESTS. THIS TIME I WANT YOU TO PLAY THE LINE WITH SOME RESTS. THIS IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT MUSIC WRITING SKILL. WHEN YOU APPLY THE TECHNIQUES I SHOW YOU, ALWAYS WRITE SOME EXERCISES ON YOUR OWN!

OK… AND NOW IT’S TIME FOR USUAL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!

LET’S GO:

EXERCISES:
CLICK to Download Exercises in Action by Andrea Fascetti – March 2014 Issue

1) TAKE THE EXERCISE. WHAT HAPPENS HERE? I USED A C DIMINISHED ARPEGGIO AND ADDED CHROMATIC APPROACHES TO CREATE AN 8-BAR PHRASE. THIS TIME I ADDED SOME RESTS.

REMEMBER: DO NOT USE A METRONOME! ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE THE EXERCISE “UNDER YOUR FINGERS”, CAN YOU USE A METRONOME. AS USUAL PLAY THE EXERCISE AS FAST AS YOU CAN!

2) TRANSPOSE THE EXERCISE IN ALL KEYS

3) ANALYZE HOW I USED THE NOTES AND THEN WRITE AN EXERCISE ON YOUR OWN. DON’T WORRY IF YOU DON’ T LIKE YOUR LINES, JUST WRITE IT!

OK?

CIAO

STAY TUNED!

ANDREA

PLEASE NOTE : in last  exercise (chromatic approaches part 9) please pay attention to bar 3…. there’s a wrong note – the 4th note is a B double flat instead of  A double flat.In bar 8, G is obviously a G flat.
