PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT BENEFITS YOUR BRAIN

bassplayersbrain1

When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, research shows how that activity becomes a total brain workout.

In this short TED Ed video lesson, Anita Collins explains the fireworks that go off in musicians’ brains when they play, and notes the long-term positive effects.

Playing an instrument engages almost all major areas of the brain at once. It combines the mathematical precision of the brain’s left hemisphere with the creative aspects of the right. Both brain halves manage fine motor skills. All this results in a pronounced strengthening of the connections and communication between the two brain hemispheres.

Playing is incredibly good for you!

NEW BOOK: LOW DOWN–CREATING SUPPORTIVE JAZZ BASS LINES

JA087

Author Danny Ziemann says: This is a comprehensive jazz bass method book representing my philosophy of bass line construction, from beginning to advanced levels of understanding.

After being frustrated by a lack of books with strong pedagogical insight on this topic, I took it upon myself to write a method that I believe accomplishes teaching the basics of sound production, layout development, and walking line construction.

The word “how” is the driving force of the pedagogy in this method. Through numerous examples, explanations, and supplemental recordings, I hope to provide the insight for the reader to understand how I make decisions and apply the same thinking to their own playing. 68 pages. Audio files (in MP3 format) are included with this title, as a download from the author’s website.
