Bass Musician Magazine: Oct/Nov 2009 Issue Featuring Richard Bona

Jake: I’m curious. Could you tell me a little bit about your time spent with Joe Zawinul in the early part of your career?

Richard: It was great playing with Joe, because Joe was one of my idols. I heard something through him that was new, and getting a chance to play with him I kind of discovered another Joe. It’s one thing listening to people, and another thing playing with them. I came to New York in 95, and I had already met Joe once in Paris. I was playing in this little place in Paris every Thursday night playing solo bass—actually, the place is kind of a dump. And Joe was staying in a hotel not far from that dump and he was passing by and heard some music being played. I found out he had asked the doorman, what “record” was playing, and he told Joe it wasn’t a record, it was a guy playing live. So Joe came in and sat down, and I didn’t really know Joe at that point, and I couldn’t see the people in the room. And he sat there for the whole set. So I was going to the bar after the set and someone comes up and says, hey man, I’m Joe Zawinul, and I looked around and saw it was him, and I said, if I knew you were here I would have stepped it up… you know, when you’re in a room and you think no ones there, sometimes it’s easy to get a little sloppy. I did see an old guy sitting in the room, but I didn’t know was him. And he told me back then, kind of the end of 93, that if I came to New York he would hire me for his band. And when I moved to New York I called him, and after that, I was in the band.

Jake: That’s kind of an amazing story.

Richard: I know. I came up listening to Jaco and Joe and it was pretty amazing. Life works in strange ways sometimes, but I don’t believe that was a coincidence. I feel it was truly supposed to happen, you know what I mean? In a big city like Paris, to be able to meet someone you admire so much, someone you have listened a great deal to, and meet them like that is pretty unusual. I spent some good times with Joe, and to tell you how connected I was with Joe, he tried to reach me three months before he passed away, and he couldn’t reach me. One day I called him back and his son told me that he wanted to talk to me. I was in Colombia at the time and was just starting to work on a song, just putting some thoughts down, that’s how it works for me, and while working on the song I came up with this real nice hook, and I continued to work on it. Then I was feeling kind of tired and it was time to stop, so I needed to put some kind of name on it, as that’s what I’ll do after I’ve come up with an idea, and I put down the name remember Joe, and I went to bed. And about fifteen or twenty minutes later I got a call and found out that Joe had just passed away. That kind of shook me out of my skin. It was almost like he came to say goodbye and was letting me know he was going. I remember that he never forgot my birthday, he always called me. I remember once I was in Istanbul Turkey and Joe called me and said happy birthday man. I always felt like we were really connected. I could play with him at any time…we didn’t need to rehearse, we didn’t need to plan anything, just boom. He was one of those kinds of musicians who you could just play with at anytime, anywhere. He was a tremendous musician and a wonderful human being. Outside of the macho personality that people seem to identify him with, he was one of the sweetest guys I’ve ever met. I have nothing but good memories.

Brian Bromberg, Paying Tribute to Scott LaFaro, April 2024

Brian Bromberg is one heavy-hitting bass player and I am in awe of his talent as one of the few individuals who is equally proficient on electric and upright bass.

You might remember our conversation back in 2018 when he released his powerhouse Funk album. Brian’s “A Little Driving Music” album is a staple on all our road trips and his Jaco and Jimi Hendrix tribute albums are mind-blowing… and I could go on and on.

Now, Brian has taken on the arduous task of producing an album paying tribute to the late, great, Scott LaFaro. He teamed up with pianist Tom Zink and drummer Charles Ruggiero and Brian delivers a commanding performance on upright. The entire album is a masterpiece and a real treat to listen to track after track.

Join us as Brian shares the details behind this project and more.

Leland Sklar, Over Half a Century of Bass, March 2024

We all have enjoyed Leland Sklar’s Bass lines for over half a century.

You might remember that we had him on our cover back in 2017 and did an update when he launched his book “Everybody Loves Me” in 2020. It was exciting to hear that The Immediate Family had got back together in the studio to work on their own music in 2019 and are now up to two albums.

Just last December, Magnolia Pictures released a documentary titled “Immediate Family” where we got a behind-the-scenes look at the massive contributions Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, Ross Kunckle, Leland Sklar and Steve Postell have made in countless songs that are the very essence of our daily personal musical soundtracks. Seeing the astronomical roster of performers they have supported over many years is very eye-opening. It is a must-see for any music lover!

Now, I am thrilled to bring you a special chat with Leland Sklar where we go more in-depth into the bass side of his musical journey.

Rodney O'Quinn, Rockin’ Hard Through the Years – December 2023

Interview With Foghat Bassist Rodney O’Quinn…

Rodney O'Quinn - Bass Musician Magazine - December 2023-v2

Many rock fans have enjoyed music by Foghat, who originally formed in London back in 1971.

Over the many decades of playing, the band members have changed, leaving behind only Roger Earl as the only original member. Bassist Rodney O’Quinn left the Pat Travers Band and joined the group in 2015 and has been laying down the low end for this iconic quartet keeping the Foghat legacy alive. With a new album titled “Sonic Mojo” which dropped on November 10th, the band is as busy as ever and there is lots of very tasty music to come.

Join me as we learn of Rodney O’Quinn’s musical journey, how he gets his sound, and his plans for the future.
