Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have done something different with your life? Like be a bassist in a professional orchestra? Justin’s’ book speaks to those who share this profession with him as well as those of us who live a far different reality.
Locke’s book is a picture-window view into the behind-the-scenes lives of the musicians of the Boston Symphony orchestra, Boston Pops orchestra and more. This book is loaded with humorous, witty accounts that made me literally laugh out loud. Generously peppered with universal truths, this book is a real fun read.
Short and to the point chapters cover many topics including; orchestral hierchy, traditions, Conductors, Forth of July concerts, tours, the pit, Band camp, practice regimes, TV, Kiddie concerts and others too numerous to mention.
One pearl in particular spoke to me:
“Just for a moment, consider the people you work for who constantly demand that you listen to them and obey them. Now shift gears and think about those few wonderful people you know who accept you, appreciate you and listen to you.
You probably give the minimum required effort to the former, and your best effort to the latter. Understanding this basic rule of human nature is essential to anyone who wishes to effectively manage top performers, in music or in any other profession.”
Simply Brilliant! “All-Right Justin!”
