Guitar Man by George Benson
This Grammy award winning guitar icon brings us a twelve-song collection of Jazz and Pop standards. Each tune is a customized performance in Benson’s classic and identifiable “voice”.
Benson’s team of musicians is rock solid! As bass is my particular area of interest, let me take this opportunity to single out up and coming Jazz bassist, Ben Williams.
Additional support comes from Pianist Joe Sample, Keyboardist David Garfield and Drummer Harvey Mason.
The opening track “Tenderly” is a solo guitar piece that highlights Benson’s domain of his instrument technically, musically and in sentiment.
A different take on a familiar tune, Benson’s rendition of Lennon and McCartney’s “I Want to Hold Your Hand” carries us far away from an auditorium full of screaming teen girls. This version is smooth, orchestrated and very relaxing; Freddie Washington carried the bass line on this tune.
“My Cherie Amor” is a very cool interpretation of a Stevie Wonder classic. George’s vocals are soulful and distinctive. I found myself singing along! Listen closely for the interesting bass lines in this piece.
Some simple tunes often have the best energy. Benson’s version of “Tequila” doesn’t stray far from the original however there are some welcome differences. Tight, syncopated percussion and drum movement link nicely with a serious upright bass groove and electric guitar work. The piano solo is a nice compliment to this already hopping cut. The totally festive feel will make you want to dance to this one!
George Benson boldly takes on a traditional standard with “Danny Boy”. This musical gem is sure to bring a tear to the eyes of all the Irish out there. The “Guitar Bagpipe” technique at the opening is a nice touch and demonstrates the versatility of the guitar in Benson’s hands
