Grammy Nominated Bassist Kevin Axt Joins LA Music Academy Faculty… Los Angeles Music Academy College of Music (www.lamusicacademy.edu) Bass Department Chair Jerry Watts today announced Kevin Axt will take the reigns as upright bass instructor, effective immediately. From Natalie Cole to Etta James, Axt has performed, recorded and toured with a diverse group of artists whose projects have received 11 Grammy nominations; he also received a 2012 Grammy nomination as co-arranger for the @tierneysutton band (Tierney is Chair of the LA Music Academy vocal department).
“We brought Kevin on board because he is a fantastic educator who can convey his vast music industry and performance experience with our students, who came to LA Music Academy to achieve long-term music careers, much like Kevin’s,” says Watts. “He is a living, breathing case history of how to be a successful performer in today’s music industry.”
Axt began classical guitar at age 13 and added bass to his arsenal within a few years. While attending USC on an orchestral scholarship, he studied with LA Phil co-principal bassist, Dennis Trembley. Axt joins existing bass department instructors Andre Berry, Steve Billman, Doug Ross, Mark Browne, Philip Bynoe, Joey Heredia, David Levray, Tim Landers and Artists-In-Residence Abe Laboriel, Lee Sklar and Jimmy Haslip.
