Rural Sketches

A six-movement work (at least at the last revision) Rural Sketches features the marimba, with accompaniment that alternates between lush, spare and eclectic by the basses. The basses come to the fore in the final movement, called “The Story of the Old Man,” with a touching and haunting recollection.

Final touches are being put on the score, and rehearsals have just begun. We’re exploring ways to create the sounds that the composer has called for, and doing the work of giving our comments and feedback. Presenting a piece for the first time is always exciting–and even nerve-wracking–and this piece is no exception!

You can visit the Chicago Bass Ensemble web page about this premiere for updated information, and read the CBE blog for tidbits here and there about the process of putting together a new work.
