Bass Transcription – Something from Nothing by Foo Fighters

This is the first single from the Foo’s most recent album Sonic Highways. Nate Mendel has been with the band since before The Colour and the Shape back in 1997 and with his brand of solid no nonsense bass playing it’s easy to see why. This track is a perfect example, with Nate often choosing to simplify riffs to fill out the sound, as opposed to copying the guitars (bar 35). He also uses chords in the heavier section to really push the low end in bar 67. Also worth noting in bar 35 is his positioning, opting for trickier fingering over unnecessary movement around the fretboard. Section B is a personal favourite of mine with Nate playing more freely, including more slides, hammer ons and arpeggios.

Have fun!
