Bass Transcription: Rutger Gunnarsson, Abba – Lay All Your Love On Me…
May 8th was a sad day for the bass community as it saw the untimely passing of Rutger Gunnarsson, one of Abbaa’s primary bass players. Without his unique take on songs such as Waterloo, Knowing Me, Knowing You & Money, Money, Money the end result would have been very different. He had a way of combining intellectually interesting note choice and an impeccable feel that pushed the songs further than the other typical disco hits of that time, and must have contributed to their mass appeal and longevity. He also worked with Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Mamma Mia and many other projects. He will be sorely missed.
This transcription takes on Lay All Your Love on Me from their 1980 album Super Trouper. Although this isn’t one of Rutger’s more technically challenging lines, it’s certainly fun to play. From the pulsing eighth notes in the intro and chorus to that fantastic groove in the verse incorporating slides and blues notes there’s more than enough to get stuck into.
It’s quick too, at 134bpm so as always I suggest you slow the track down or play to a slower metronome before attempting it at full speed.
