Gary Karr, John Patitucci, the bassists of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and Dominic Seldis appearing at the first edition of the Dutch Double Bass Festival

PR – Double Bass legends Gary Karr and John Patitucci will be performing at the first edition of the Dutch Double Bass Festival. The festival is an initiative of double bassist James Oesi and takes place from the 19th to the 21st of May (the 19th being devoted to masterclasses and workshops) in De Electriciteitsfabriek, The Hague. Tickets go on sale today. The programme is made up of a diverse line-up of more than ten national and international acts in which the double bass takes the leading role. Classical music as well as jazz, cross-over and contemporary music are all represented in the programme.
The American bassist, Gary Karr, is recognised as one of the greatest and most influential double bassists of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Since his televised debut with the New York Philharmonic and Leonard Bernstein in 1962, Gary Karr has performed as soloist all over the world appearing with among others the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal SymphonyOrchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic. GaryKarr will be appearing in the Netherlands exclusively for the Dutch Double Bass Festival and will be performing with the Matangi Quartet and fellow bassist Ying Lai Green.
Jazz bassist John Patitucci rose to fame as the bassist of pianist Chick Corea, he has also performed in the bands of, among others, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. At the moment he is touring with his highly-praised ‘Children of the Light’ – an Electric Guitar Quartet. John Patitucci will be giving a solo double bass concert exclusively for the Dutch Double Bass Festival.
More than 10 national and international double bass acts
The Dutch Double Bass Festival offers a broad range of live music: from classical to jazz, cross-over and avant-garde. Friday the 19th will be devoted to masterclasses and workshops while the regular festival days will take place on the 20th and 21st of May. Joining Gary Karr and John Patitucci in the line-up will be a score of double bassists. Including a few world premieres. Principal of the bass section of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Dominic Seldis, will be premiering his arrangement of West Side Story. The bass section of the world-renowned Rotterdam Philharmonic will be performing with star bassist, Edicson Ruiz of the Berlin Philharmonic. Asko|Schönberg’s bassist Quirijn van Regteren Altena , after years of development, will be presenting his own Hybrid bass invention: an acoustic bass with the ability to connect to the unlimited world of digital sound.
Leading bassists from across the country and abroad will also be appearing at the festival. Well-known improviser, (winner of the Dutch most important jazzaward, the Boy Edgar Prize 2016) Wilbert de Joode will be giving two solo concerts and the Netherlands’ most well known jazz bassist Ernst Glerum will perform with his new trio Glerum Omnibus with the young jazz sensations Jamie Peet (drums) and Timothy Banchet (keys). Festival founder, James Oesi, will perform the solo works of Bach on double bass, and the american Cody Takacs will be premiering works written especially for him. Belgian bassist Joris Vanvinckenroye (member of BASta) exploits electronics and loops in his catchy compositions.
The Dutch Double Bass Festival already announced the appearances of Adam Ben Ezra – exclusively for the festival, for the first time in the Netherlands, and Korean star bassist Minje Sung.
Renowned bass builders Harry Jansen and Rogier Dieges will be holding an atelier in residence in which members of the public will be able to ask questions and witness what goes on in the workshop of a bass builder.
