Bassist Nathan Peck/Alex Skolnick Trio – Europe Unbound 2017 Tour

New From Bassist Nathan Peck…

From rock to jazz, Alex Skolnick has made a name for himself as someone who has successfully done the seemingly impossible… rise to fame as one of the world’s premier heavy metal guitarists and then become a jazz musician!

Bassist Nathan Peck has been in the trio since 2003 and is on 4 out of the 5 jazz trio records, which have traditionally focused on creating jazz renditions of heavy metal music. It may sound strange but it’s entirely cohesive. As Nathan puts it, “We are very picky about the songs we cover. There has to be a recognizable melody and some harmonic content to work with. We like to re-harmonize as well so there has to be some substance. One example is our arrangement of ‘Still Lovin You’ by the Scorpions. That melody is recognizable on any instrument!”

A noticeable characteristic of this band is the sheer dynamic volume. This creates many challenges for Mr. Peck who plays acoustic bass in the band. Nathan adds, “If I were to play bass guitar in this trio, things would be easier but so much less jazzy and more like fusion. The upright sort of brings it all into focus. We swing too so it’s gotta be upright!” The challenge comes in getting the upright to match the dynamic range of the guitar and drums, without feeding back. For this feat, he uses very specific gear – the Czech-Ease Acoustic Road Bass by David Gage is his bass of choice as well as Aguilar amps, cabs and pedals and a Fishman Platinum Pro EQ, which all work together helping Nathan blaze through some pretty complicated passages.

Peck’s playing can be heard on the trio’s albums ‘Transformation’ (Magna-Carta 2004) ‘Last Day In Paradise’ (Magna-Carta 2007) ‘Veritas’ (Palmetto 2011) and the latest ‘AST Live Unbound’ (Skol Productions 2017), which was recorded live at Spin Music in New York City. The new album is also available in vinyl format, features two new compositions (Unbound, Culture Shock) as well as five live versions of previously recorded songs.

Nathan Peck has also released his debut solo album ‘Top Dead Center’ and can be seen gigging around NYC with his group, The Funky Electrical Unit.
