Arguably the greatest, most influential bass player ever, James Jamerson was the uncredited session bassist on nearly all releases from Motown Records in the 1960s. A member of the core studio-musicians group informally known as the Funk Brothers, Jamerson drove the evolution of the Motown style as much as any other artist. He also led the transition from the acoustic bass to the electric “Fender Bass.”
Here are the classic bass lines he played on 13 beloved hit records from 1964 to 1971, accompanying Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and more.
