New Album: Colin Sankey, Colin Response
Colin Sankey’s new album “Colin Response” combines Wooten-esque technical mastery with Vulfpeck-style funk jams.
Colin’s intricate bass work has astounded audiences across the world. His arrangements of Get Lucky, the Mario Theme, and Seven Nation Army have accumulated over 15 million views across social media platforms. His bass videos have also been featured on Scott’s Bass Lessons, Bass Vids, Mission Bass, BassTheWorld, Charles Berthoud’s channel, Davie504’s channel, and George Collier’s YouTube channel.
“Colin Response” showcases Colin’s skills at composing in a variety of genres, including funk, fusion, and Latin Jazz. Colin started composing this album after his arrangement of the Mario Theme went viral in 2023, spending hundreds of hours fine tuning the songs with his looper before bringing the charts into rehearsals with a full band.
Colin’s versatility as a bassist and composer is put on full display throughout the album. He shows full mastery of the two-handed tapping technique by superimposing a Jazz reharmonization and up-tempo swing feel over the Mario Theme, while sticking to infectious fingerstyle and slap grooves for the title track, “Colin Response.” Tunes such as “Bailando en la Calle” and “Musica de la Noche” feature Colin in a support role, laying down a tumbao bass line while featuring catchy guitar and sax melodies over Afro-Cuban grooves.
Colin is the 1st place winner of the 2022 Phil Jones Solo Bass Competition in New York, where Marcus Miller’s manager said Colin was the best bassist he’d ever seen at that competition. Colin is also the 2nd place winner of the 2021 BITE Bass Contest, hosted by Charles Berthoud, and has been featured on Davie504’s channel. Colin endorses Michael Tobias Design basses, GruvGear, and Roland.
