Most of us should be familiar with Berklee prodigy Tony Grey. Tony also plays with Hiromi (see last issues review) as well as having appeared on John McLaughlin’s Industrial Zen and many other projects as a sideman. Tony is one of the new breed of bass players. Incredible technique (seriously!), advanced knowledge of harmony and intelligent compositions. Bottom line, I really like this CD. Chasing Shadows also happens to showcase many of my favorite players around today (Chris Dave, Ronald Bruner, Elliot Mason, Tim Miller, Bob Reynolds, Lionel Loueke, Gregoire Maret, Hiromi, and many others…). I want to give an example of the writing style, but the best I could come up with was John McLaughlin collaborates with Bruce Hornsby (but with gospel drummers)…. Not QUITE it, but that does give a slight idea as to the tone and feel of the album.
One thing I noticed with this album is that every track has at least one moment that makes me say, “YEAH” out loud. I like that and I’m pretty sure most of you will, too.
