Bass Musician Magazine interviews Peter Fand from Zarkana by Cirque du Soleil…

If you know me at all, you already know I am a huge fan of all of the Cirque du Soleil shows I have ever had the opportunity to see. Each is unique and extraordinarily creative with absolutely superb live music. The sheer transition from someone’s imagination to the reality that makes these shows happen is mind boggling, and Zarkana by Cirque du Soleil is no exception.

We had the opportunity to interview Derek Jones, bassist for KA at the MGM Grand in our November 2010 issue. Now, we are excited to bring you an in-depth interview with Peter Fand, Bassist and Percussionist for Zarkana by Cirque du Soleil at the Aria Resort & Casino… brought to you directly, on-set from atop ‘the eagle’.

Peter is an incredibly nice guy and talented multi-instrumentalist with a rich and interesting world history when it comes to his musical/life journey and his road to Cirque… enjoy!

About Zarkana…

Zarkana, a visually stunning modern acrobatic spectacular, began its residency at ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on November 1 following hugely successful engagements at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Arena Madrid and Moscow’s Kremlin State Palace Theatre.

Set in a world where physical ability meets the extraordinary of Cirque du Soleil, Zarkana, which TIME magazine proclaimed “the show of the summer” in New York City and The New York Times called “aah-inspiring,” has been seen by more than 1.5 million people during its triumphant 2011-2012 international run.

The name Zarkana is a fusion of the words “bizarre” and “arcane” (arcane means “mystery” or “secret”). The twisted fictional world of Zarkana is an elusive destination that is fantastic yet bizarre. The name refers to the irresistibly odd and delightfully strange aura of this place and its inhabitants.

Zark, the ringmaster of an extraordinary circus coming back to life, guides us in an abandoned theatre populated by a motley collection of off-the-wall characters and incomparable acrobats. Zarkana is a visual vortex set in a twisted acrobatic fantasy universe where, little by little, chaos and craziness give way to a true celebration.

Zarkana is written and directed by François Girard, one of Quebec’s most highly regarded creators who is equally at ease in cinema (Silk,The Red Violin), opera, visual arts and theatre and has earned an enviable international reputation over the years. A keen music lover, he is particularly known for the hybrid worlds he creates in which music plays a predominant role. His works are recognized for their great musicality, both in terms of sound and image.
