Darren Frate on Minor Chord Voicings

Meet Darren Frate –

Hey everyone I hope you stayed busy working on some of the altered tuning major chord voicings we did last month. This month we are going to look at some minor chord voicings using the altered tuning of C-G-D-A.

The first one is a simple C minor triad. Remember all of these are in the tuning of C-G-D-A. We are going to play a “C” note on the 5th fret of the “G” string…a “G” note on the 5th fret of the “D” string and a Eb on the 6th fret of the”A” string.

Next we are going to play a C-(b13) chord. Play a “C” note on the 5th fret of the “G” string…an “Ab” on the 6th fret of the “D” string and an Eb on the 6th fret of the “A” string.

Next by again keeping these shapes and moving one note we can get a couple other minor voicings. Start with the C minor triad shape and simply move the “C” note on the 5th fret of the “G” string to an “F” note on the 5th fret of the “C” string and it becomes an F-7. Again by moving one note from the C-(b13)…the “C” note on the 5th fret of the “G” string to an “F” note the 5th fret of the “C” string we get an F-7(9).

Move these shapes around all over the neck and start to experiment and see what new ideas you can come up with. Until next time…see ya.
