I can’t think of an album John has put out that didn’t seem like the perfect follow up to his last. This ambitious tribute to his musical heroes contains 11 original compositions each recalling an energy, vibe and/or sense of interplay reminiscent of the muse behind it. I could not have envisioned a better trio to take on the task (consisting of Joe Lovano & Brian Blade with Sachi Patitucci guesting on cello and additional percussion by Rogerio Boccato). From the group interplay of “Monk/Trane” to the ultra swampy “Messaien’s Gumbo” or the evocative “Scenes From an Opera”, this lineup performs every bit as well as you’d assume they would. With wonderful performances from top to bottom, any fan of any of these musicians would do well to give this one a listen!
