HI MY FRIENDS!

IT’S REALLY GREAT TO BE HERE AGAIN. I’M PROUD TO BE PART OF THIS AWESOME STAFF AND I THROUGHLY ENJOY THIS MAGAZINE…GREAT IDEAS AND GREAT MUSICIANS HERE!

I HOPE YOU’VE WORKED OVER THE CHORDS I PRESENTED LAST TIME, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS CHALLENGING WORK. I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I WORKED ON THESE EXERCISES, I WANTED TO STOP PLAYING! I’M SURE YOU’VE NOTICED THAT THIS IS A “PROGRESSIVE” SERIES OF EXERCISES, SO PLEASE GO BACK AND CHECK MY FIRST LESSON AS WELL AS TAKING A LOOK AT ALL THE CHORDS YOU’VE BEEN PRESENTED.

LAST LESSON WE USED MINOR CHORDS WITH A MAJOR SEVENTH. TODAY WE’LL LOOK AT A NEW CHORD, THE C7sus4 CHORD. IT HAS A VERY COOL SOUND. ONE OF THE PEOPLE THAT INTODUCED THE TRUE MAGIC OF THIS CHORD IS PIANIST HERBIE HANCOCK. GIVE A LISTEN TO MAIDEN VOYAGE FROM HERBIE’S MAIDEN VOYAGE ALBUM. THIS SONG WAS A REVOLUTIONARY TUNE FOR ITS TIME BECAUSE IT CONSISTED ENTIRELY OF SUS CHORDS. ANOTHER SONG THAT POPULARIZED SUS CHORDS AMONG JAZZ MUSICIANS WAS JOHN COLTRANE’S NAIMA, WHICH ALSO DESERVES A CLOSE LISTEN.

HERE IS TODAYS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:

EX.1 TAKE A C7sus4 TWO OCTAVE ARPEGGIO (C F G Bb C F G Bb G F C Bb G F C) UP AND DOWN THE FINGERBOARD AND FORCE YOURSELF TO PLAY IT VERY SLOWLY, WITHOUT A METRONOME. SAY THE NAMES OF THE NOTES WHILE PRACTICING. REMEMBER–NO GROOVE–NOTHING–ONLY YOU AND THE NOTES! NOW START TO PRACTICE ALL THE NOTES USING ONLY ONE STRING (WHEN POSSIBLE), THEN TWO STRINGS, THEN THREE STRINGS, AND FINALLY FOUR STRINGS! PRACTICE THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL YOU’VE ABSORBED THE INFORMATION. THEN YOU CAN INCREASE SPEED AND TAKE IT TO A FASTER LEVEL. THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO LEARN ARPEGGIOS, SCALES, AND YOUR FINGERBOARD. I SUGGEST YOU SING ALONG WITH ALL NOTES WHILE YOU’RE PRACTICING, TO OPEN UP YOUR EARS.
