Being a fan of his work, you can imagine my excitement when I got a copy of Tom’s latest CD “Just For The Record by Tom Kennedy” to review. Much of the music on this recording is Tom’s composition, along with a stellar lineup of musicians flawlessly executing the score.

“Breakneck”, the opening number, is true to its title. Rapid, machine gun like precision of bass and drums really grabs one by the ears and gets your attention. Within the first few seconds you are made totally aware that Tom is a master of his craft; the prestissimo tempo of this piece is mind boggling!
“Just For The Record” strolls in with a nice funky swagger. A syncopated beat is the scaffolding for some tight Sax, Guitar and Keyboard work; solid bass groove with a little flash here and there keeps it all together.
“Joyful Noise” lets us experience some of Tom’s upright playing. Beautifully woven piano, bass and drums are perfectly balanced and show us an intricate pattern of musical delight. Tom fires off an impressive solo mid-tune that is worth listening to.
“Loves Disguise” gives us a tasty Latin romantic ballad treat. This tune is a very smooth Samba with a bass solo sandwiched in the middle. There is a great show of keyboard and sax skill along with the congas and drums. Expect some very cool changes throughout this one.
“Alone Together” shows us a more traditional “Walking Jazz” kind of tune with some really dazzling bass work to make it really pop. Solid groove along with staccato bass attack and awesome soloing make this a showcase for Tom’s amazing talent. As always, excellent musical support from the other musicians with some notable altisimo for Nathan on sax.
I enjoyed all the tracks on this CD and I am sure you will too. This CD is a must for all you fans of quality Jazz!
