BASS LINES BY JAIME VAZQUEZ: THE SIXTEENTH-NOTE GROOVE PART II – ALAIN CARON’S STYLE

Hello BMM and Community! It’s summertime and here it is, Part II! For this edition, I have some grooves from my BMM colleague and 6 string bass virtuoso, “Alain Caron.” Enjoy these great examples from the French Canadian jazz fusion master! I have rearranged a few examples for four strings.

Fig. 1 – This is the Dropped D version of the main groove of “Cherokee Drive.” Notice the use of tied notes, the b5 and the chromatic passing tones. Listen to Cherokee Drive

Fig. 2 – An excerpt from “Flight of the Bebop Bee.” This is a very cool groove with a quarter note rest at the first beat of every bar. A good example of space and the interaction of the tied note and chromaticism. Listen to Flight of the Bebop Bee

Fig. 3 – The Dropped D version of “Slam the Clown.” Here we have a challenging groove with chromatic passing tones and the evil b5. A good one for warming up! Listen to Slam The Clown

For a good performance start slowly and then increase the speed. Remember! Accuracy is the key and never forget that good practice makes perfect. Stay tuned for Part III and let’s see who will be the next THE SIXTEENTH-NOTE GROOVE MASTER.
