BASS LINES BY JAIME VAZQUEZ: THE SIXTEENTH-NOTE GROOVE PART III – DAVE ELLEFSON’S STYLE… Hello bass players! Welcome to the third part of the article devoted to the sixteenth-note grooves in the style of the greatest and most influential bass players in the world. In previous editions, we have studied the styles of two masters of jazz fusion: “Jaco Pastorius and Alain Caron.” But this time we will devote it to the metalheads. There is an American bass player, instructor and one of the founding member of the American thrash metal band called Megadeth. He also has various side projects: Temple of Brutality, F5, and Killing Machine. Yes! I’m talking about the “Metal Bass Legend,” Dave Ellefson. He is an icon in the metal scene like Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, etc. He has an unlimited number of sixteenth-note grooves but I have made a very special selection just for you. You will notice that many of the grooves are doubled by the rhythm guitar, something very common in the metal music. Also, Ellefson uses a pick to play all these grooves. Have fun!
