BERRY OAKLEY BASS LINES – EBOOK/PDF VERSION

Welcome to this collection of Berry Oakley transcriptions. Berry Oakley was the Bass player for The Allman Brothers prior to his untimely death in 1972 in a motorcycle accident. (And this just three blocks from where Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident the year before.)

Berry was a guy who played in a band with a full sound – two guitars and a keyboard player – but yet still managed to be distinctive without ‘stepping on nobody’s toes’ to quote another San Francisco bass player, Rocco Prestia.

We are fortunate that there are a number of albums out there that keep Berry’s legacy alive – particularly the double release of the Live At The Filmore album. (Man, that venue had some wicked concerts…another of my favourite live albums was recorded there – King Curtis Live At The Filmore. Jerry Jemmott is on fire on that one.)

If you aspire to play blues rock of any description, Berry’s lines are definitely worth listening to and learning from.

Berry Oakley’s work is woefully underappreciated and woefully under represented on the book shelves. So hopefully, this collection will go some way towards presenting some of the work of a bass player I think is a model example for beginners and intermediates to emulate. This includes accurate note-for-note transcription, one written in standard notation and TAB, and the other in just standard notation. 168 pages altogether.
