RED HOT + BACH Features Ron Carter on Cello Suite No. 1
They range across freely imagined tracks from mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile (Nickel Creek, The Punch Brothers), singer/songwriters Gabriel Kahane and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), jazz legend Ron Carter, DJ/producer King Brittand the Icelandic band amiina, to imaginative classical artists such as the Kronos Quartet, composer Max Richter, violinist Daniel Hope and organ virtuoso Cameron Carpenter.
Red Hot + Bach is being released simultaneously as a standard physical/digital edition with nineteen tracks, as a special expanded digital edition featuring ten additional tracks, and an iPad app designed to open your eyes and ears, and lead you to discover new ways to interact with the timeless energy and beauty of Bach’s music. It’s the next progression in the Brian Eno, Bjork, Radiohead lineage of music with apps.
The Red Hot + Bach interactive app showcases Bach’s music in two different ways. The first allows you to create stunning visuals while listening to some of the greatest Bach recordings of all time (including performances by Glenn Gould, Yo-Yo Ma and Leopold Stokowski) as well as new tracks from the Red Hot + Bach album. The visuals change along with the music as well as how you touch and move your fingers across the screen. Each track has a custom design, which you can change and transform through an intuitive drawing tool. You can also save your abstract music video and play it back later.
The second part of the app allows you to interact directly with the music. The interface graphically represents all the underlying elements of each track, which you can explore by turning layers on and off as well as adjust their volume. There are also surprises that transform the track in unexpected ways. In this section there is also a historic session by the Kronos Quartet recorded at Thomas Edison’s factory recorded on his original 1887 wax cylinder as well as three other historical sound recording devices: a 78 rpm lathe, an analogue tape machine and a digital ProTools session on a laptop. While the track plays you can explore these different simultaneous recordings of the same session and hear how recorded sound has changed over the past 125 years.
Finally, there is a section with credits and project information that also features a contemporary motion graphic story of Bach’s life, illustrated by Hilary Allison.
