Focusrite iTrack Dock Review

Recording at home or while traveling ? Using an iPad 4 or later ? Then the Focusrite iTrack Dock will suit your needs.

The Focusrite iTrack Dock has one instrument input, two mic inputs, two line inputs, headphone out, two monitor outputs for powered monitors, USB to power midi controllers (check with Focusrite for compatible midi controllers), phantom power, direct monitoring, and a slip mat for use with the thinner iPad air. The iTrack Dock lightning connector is adjustable for both the iPad and iPad mini. A free download of TAPE from Focusrite is available in the app store and is a great program for recording.

Operation is simple, just connect the supplied power supply then your iPad into the dock connector and it’s ready to go. The iTrack Dock will keep your iPad charged while recording. I tested the iTrack Dock not only with TAPE, but with Garageband and Cubasis and both are fully functional. While this device is great for recording and even completing an entire project, it does allow you to expand what you have created with the iTrack Dock. For instance, if you are using Garageband or Cubasis, you can import your work onto your PC or Mac through iTunes and add any additional recording processes, effect, etc, and finish up in Cubase, Logic, or Garageband.I was also able to use the iTrack Dock with other applications such as Capo, Chordbot, and Band-in-a Box for practice. With the vast amount of music application available, it is sure to work with all of them. One thing I should point out is that for certain applications that you use with the iTrack Dock, it may ask for access to your microphone. This does need to be allowed even though the microphone itself is not being used.
