Mikko Nurmi: The Art of Ron Carter

Author Mikko Nurmi’s new book The Art of Ron Carter offers a detailed look at the basslines of the great Ron Carter.

The book is a comprehensive insight to his style on some of his recordings from the 1960’s with 130 musical examples and six full-length transcriptions from legendary performances such as E.S.P. and Iris (from Miles Davis’s album E.S.P.), Pinocchio (from Miles Davis’s Nefertiti), Witch Hunt and Infant Eyes (from Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil) and Dolphin Dance (from Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage). The book also gives an overview of his career and his thinking about being a bass player.

The most recorded bassist in the history of jazz and possibly the most recorded musician in the history of recording industry regardless of the instrument, Ron Carter is a jazz legend of the highest rank. Of all the bass players in the history of jazz, Ron Carter might well be the most significant player of all times. Not only has he played on countless records and been a key player on many of the classic jazz albums since the 1960’s, he has influenced generations of musicians. In addition, his respectable career on music education and his magnificent attitude towards music makes him a role model for countless musicians.

The Art of Ron Carter is a 152 page book written in standard notation (no tab). The book is a sequel for Nurmi’s earlier book ‘The Music of Paul Chambers’.
