Introduction to Secondary Dominants by Josh Needleman
You can’t always rely on Mixolydian when you encounter a dominant 7th chord. Take a few moments to begin to understand dominant 7th chords and a few ways you might encounter them on charts. Getting Around The Bass goes into further detail on what modes and arpeggios to play when later in the book, but here are two pages to get you started on how you might think about these incredibly flexible chords. When the theory doesn’t “add up”, there is a good chance that either a secondary dominant or diminished chord is to blame.
