This 1973 classic remains relevant today for a number of reasons. Aston Barrett’s bass line has a continuity and subtle variation rarely heard in today’s world of cut and paste bass lines. Mr. Barrett makes use of the “one drop” at the top of verse 1, which leads to head scratching at first. Did he just miss the beginning? If you take the time to study the part, it is clear that the answer is no. As the track develops, he employs the “one drop” here and there along with perfectly played sublime ad-libs! I recommend that you listen to the track and watch the transcription a few times before digging in. Enjoy!
