Expanding the Slap Bass Vocabulary with Ray Riendeau – Groove #1…

Hello fellow bassists!

As a teacher for many years I’ve found that creating a “vocabulary” of slap grooves helps to facilitate getting better at this particular style of playing. Techniques are only beneficial when they become just another means of creating music. Hopefully the grooves I present will have you trying some new ideas and also helping you to come up with some new ideas of your own.

I will be breaking down the grooves, playing them at a slow tempo and up to speed (video). Notation will also be included.

Lets get started!

GROOVE #1

L = Left Hand

H = Hammer On

T = Thumb (2 T’s in a row is T down followed by T up)

P1 = Pop Index Finger

P2 = Pop Middle Finger

X = Percussive Note (notated on string being attacked)
