Adam Nitti “Not Of This World” – CD Review

I’ve followed Adam’s releases for quite some time, and I don’t know how he does it, but each one excels over the previous one. Just when I thought he couldn’t top his last release, which was superb, and the one before that, he does it again! Appropriately titled, “Not Of This World,” which to me is a deserving title, as the music is really – out of this world! Adam has pulled, what I consider, to be some of the finest musicians for this CD. Kirk Covington, Derico Watson, Keith Carlock, and Sonny Emory are featured on drums. Jason Palmer is on drums and percussion. Gerald Gradwohl, Shane Theriot, Scott Bernard, and Tom Hemby are featured on guitar. Featured on keys are Michael Whittaker and Chris Carver. Rounding out the lineup is Mark Douthit on tenor sax.

The makeup of the basses that Adam used are: 4, 5 and 6-strings, as well as a 5-string fretless in Oakwood; all programming is also done by Adam.

Not Of This World,” contains eight tracks, all composed and arranged by Adam. Everything is very well executed including, syncopation lines, smooth grooving bass lines, and melodic chord movements on the opening tune, “AntiSocialMedia,” to some of the most impressive slap grooves on “Roofquake.” “Francesca’s Day Out,” is one of my favorites, with everything from the arrangement to the melody lines.

Being a solo release from a bassist, “Not Of This World” has some of the best solos I have heard in some time. It doesn’t matter if Adam is playing a few notes, or a multitude of notes, you can tell by the phrasing that true emotion and feeling are put into each and every solo. All of the artists that have contributed to the work are giving 110%, which can sometimes be hard to come by, especially when performing and recording music of this nature.

Not Of This World” has something for everyone, from smooth jazz and funk to fusion, and definitely needs to be a part of everyone’s music library!
