Bass Transcription – Go To Sea Once More

“Go To Sea Once More” is an English sea shanty whose exact origins can be traced to the English Merchant Navy, likely from the 1700 – 1900 period. I first heard the song in two versions on the Grateful Dawg soundtrack where Jerry Garcia & David Grisman pay their respects to the Ewan McColl version where it is titled “Off To Sea Once More”. The song has a few other names too.

Here I have interpreted the melody to be bowed on the upright bass. If you down bow the first two notes, you can alternate the bow for the rest of the melody and it works out fine. I have added the chord symbols so that your favorite strum buddy can accompany you!
