Brad Cheeseman Group Wins 2016 TD Grand Prix Jazz Award…

PR – The Brad Cheeseman Group, led by the Toronto-area bassist and composer, was awarded the prestigious TD Grand Prix Jazz Award at this year’s Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. The prize features recording time, future festival appearances, prize money, and included a feature performance on the festival’s TD Stage. Each year, the festival selects ten Canadian artists to compete for the award and, after careful consideration, selects a winner based on their festival performances. In addition to the Brad Cheeseman Group, this year’s competition included Tara Kannangara (Ontario), Lisanne Tremblay (Quebec), Tertio (Quebec), Samuel Bonnet (Quebec), Autobahn (Ontario), Annie Dominique (Quebec), FOG Brass Band (Ontario) and the Simon Denizart Trio (Quebec).

Brad Cheeseman—joined by guitarist Robert Chapman, pianist Sam Kogen, drummer Marito Marques and saxophonist Chelsea McBride—delivered the exciting competition-deciding performance on July 4 at the Club Jazz Casino stage, performing selections from the band’s award-winning self-titled album for hundreds of enthusiastic festival-goers. Later that night, Brad received a call from the festival letting him know the good news. At the festival’s press conference, Cheeseman stated that “to be here at all, especially with nine other fantastic artists, is a huge honour and to get this recognition is incredible.” The band later delivered a concluding performance on the festival’s TD Stage on July 5.

The Brad Cheeseman Group released their self-titled album on June 26, 2015 and it features eight of the Hamilton bassist’s original compositions. Something Else! writer S. Victor Aaron said that the album “heralds the arrival of a bassist who brings fun and sophistication together like few others can,” while four-time JUNO-winning bassist/composer Chris Tarry described the album as “the perfect combination of everything that matters: groove, melody, and the all-important bass line.” The album won “Instrumental Recording of the Year” at the 2016 Hamilton Music Awards and had also been nominated for “Best Jazz Instrumental” at the 2015 Toronto Independent Music Awards. The Brad Cheeseman Group previously won “Instrumental Recording of the Year” at the 2013 Hamilton Music Awards for its Mixed Messages EP, and has been blending the rich language of jazz with elements of rock, R&B, fusion and other styles since 2012.

In addition to his work as band leader, Brad Cheeseman has released is a regular member of both On Topic and the Brownman Electryc Trio, and has performed with many great Canadian jazz musicians, including Colleen Allen, Bruce Cassidy, Terry Clarke, Tara Davidson, Adrean Farrugia, John Macleod, Reg Schwager and Nancy Walker.
