Some one of the most versatile direct boxes come from Darkglass electronics, and the Microtubes B7K Analog Bass Preamp is no exception. From clean output to overdriven output, this DI will give you what you are looking for. The EQ portion lets you control the amount of lows, lo meds, hi meds, and treble. I find this has been really useful when performing in certain places that don’t have enough room for a bass rig, and you must go direct. Other controls are level, which is for overdrive, drive, which sets the amount of overdrive, and blend to mix the clean signal with the overdrive.

The features for the B7K don’t stop there! The attack toggle switch has three options to toggle between, which are boost, cut, and flat. This helps to control the amount of treble when using overdrive. I didn’t really notice much of a difference when just using the pedal clean with only the EQ. The grunt toggle switch also has three positions for the low frequency range when using overdrive. The options are fat, thin, and raw.

Using the B7K Preamp for overdrive, I was really comfortable with the fat setting as it did seem to not loose the low end. The other settings are really useful as well, and really all three settings can cover a wide range of genres for both the grunt and attack.

The B7K is a great addition to any pedalboard for live use and very well rounded for studio use. Connections are 14” input and output, parallel output, direct output, and there is a ground lift for the direct output. It is powered by the typical 9-volt adapter used for pedals.
