Telemann’s Fantasies for the Double Bass
Carl Fischer Music announces the release of Fantasies for the Double Bass (BF123 – Score – $11.99) composed by Georg Philipp Telemann and transcribed and edited by Nicholas Recuber.
Nicholas Recuber’s transcription of Georg Philipp Telemann’s Fantasies for Double Bass promises to bridge the gap between the famous double bass sonatas by Marcello and Telemann and the cello suites of J.S. Bach. With this edition, modern bassists can enjoy a beautiful new addition to the instrument’s repertoire with plenty of room for interpretation. Inspired by Nobuko Imai’s recorded performance, Recuber left passages that can be played in multiple positions or strings unmarked, with his interpretations noted only where he felt strongly about tone or color.
Georg Philipp Telemann, a German Composer during the late Baroque period, is best known for his sacred compositions for a variety of ensembles. Discouraged at a young age from pursuing music as a career, Telemann remained, throughout his life, primarily self taught. While attending the University of Leipzig as a law student, his musical talents were recognized and supported by the local community, subsequently launching his musical career. It was not long before he became the director of the Leipzig Opera and eventually the musical director for the cities of Frankfurt am Main and later Hamburg. Considered by his contemporaries to be the greatest composer alive, Telemann enjoyed a prolific and respected career and his legacy continues to inspire performers to this day.
