Tim Lefebvre Releases “Whose Hat Is This?”
Pinning bassist Tim Lefebvre down to just one genre, sound, or style is a fool’s errand.
Tim has covered rock to jazz, pop to electronica, and more. He has added funkiness to Knower, explored sound textures within song forms with the late David Bowie, and poured soul into the massive Tedeschi Trucks Band sound. Tim has now released “Whose Hat Is This”, a muscular, frenetic, and forceful record on which he flexes his experimental improvisation chops.
The album was recorded live in November of 2015 during a Tedeschi Trucks Band tour stop. Fellow members of TTB – drummers Tyler Greenwell and JJ Johnson and saxophonist Kebbi Williams – join Tim on the sonic adventures captured at the A-Trane in Berlin.
The record is dense and complex, and made especially rich with Tim’s work. “Hobo Gigolo Style” is a wonderful introduction to this sound. The track begins with the drum duo and Tim setting the stage for Kebbi Williams’ sax entrance. The sound of this track, and much of the record, is unsettled in a pleasing way. The tension filled atmosphere is powerful.
Another song, “Letta Brue (or the worst pronunciation of Lefebvre ever)”, is a great tune in which Tim and Kebbi Williams hold a musical conversation that quickly goes from polite to rapid point-counterpoint. Tim’s playing here is excellent, playing accompaniment that steps forward in solo fashion at times.
There are small moments of breath to be had within the tracks. “It Won’t Help You” opens with a hypnotic ostinato and pulls the listener into the composition. To be sure, the trance is soon shattered with frantic double time sessions that feature Tim racing across the bass.
