Tech 21 has done it yet again with the Geddy Lee Signature SansAmp GED-2112.

Rush fans can always associate with Geddy Lee and of course, 2112. Let me start out by stating, I have never seen a rack mount unit such as the GED-2112. This has to be one of the most versatile dual preamps with parallel processing ever made.

Let’s start with connections. There is a 1/4” input on the front panel and 2 inputs on the rear panel.

When using the front panel connection for your bass, you cannot use the rear inputs. However, if you want to be able to connect two basses, you can use the rear inputs and choose between them with the A/B selector switch on the front panel.

The GED-2112 has two separate preamps that run in parallel. The first preamp is the Drive section, which is modeled after the SansAmp RPM. The Drive section contains the following controls: Drive gives you the similar feel to a tube amp from a boost in the clean sounds, to an all out tube overdrive effect. The Mid, Bass, and Treble controls all have boost and cut from -12dB to + 12dB. The Mid control is shared with the Mid Shift control, which acts as a parametric EQ with a range of 170Hz to 3.0 kHZ. The Bass control functions at 80 Hz with the Treble control at 3.2kHz. The Blend control mixes the amount of dry signal from your bass with that of the drive preamp section. Even when the Blend is at minimum, the Bass, Mid, and Treble controls still work. Level 1 controls the output of the Drive preamp section. The second preamp section is the Deep preamp section. There are only two controls for the Deep preamp, which are Saturation and Level 2. Saturation is similar to drive in that it adjusts the gain and overdrive levels. Level 2 functions just as Level 1 in the Drive preamp section.

On the rear panel, besides the two inputs. there is the unaffected output, which sends a direct signal without being processed through GED-2112. There are two 1/4” outputs and two XLR Direct outputs, one each for the Drive and Deep preamp sections. Both the 1/4” outputs and the XLR Direct outputs have a selector switch for either 0dB or -20 dB. The XLR Direct output also has a ground lift selector. The remaining connections are tuner out, and effect loop. The effect loop also has a mix 50/50 switch, which sends either 50% of the processed signal through the effects loop or 100%. Sansamp recommends that you use the switch in the 50/50 mode engaged.

I ran the Geddy Lee Signature SansAmp GED-2112 through quite a few different scenarios, from using a single bass in the front panel, to connecting two basses to the back panel and going between them. I even connected up two different amps, one on the Drive preamp output and the other to the Deep preamp output. Of all the different parameters you can setup on the GED-2112, whether using both outputs or just one at a time, leaves you with endless combinations. Tones can go from clean, deep and round right up to heavy overdrive. It’s nice to have a unit such as the GED-2112 where you have multiple outputs and multiple inputs and can meet any expectation no mater what is needed for recording or live performance.
