I have reviewed a few Cort basses over the past couple of years, and they never cease to amaze me.

…And then comes along the Cort A5 Plus SCMS OPN, which is just phenomenal! I’ve always been a fan of single cut basses, the way they resonant, and yes, I think more wood is better, giving better resonance and tone. A few other things I really like about the Cort A5 Plus SCMS OPN is that it is multi scale and very comfortable to play. For a five string, I do like the offerings of a 34” scale, and it being multi scale, the range is 35.5 – 34” scale with the low B being 35.5” scale and the G being 34” scale with E,A,and D strings in between. In comparison to a standard scale bass of 34”, the multi scale length on the Cort A5 feels just right. I’ve played a few other multi scale basses, and some of them felt like the neck was the length of a football field, not so with this model. The multi scale length is very comfortable and is very quick to adapt to. As a matter of fact, that adjustment for me was almost instant and felt natural. A multi scale bass is designed to give even tension across all strings and better intonation and the Cort A5 Plus SCMS OPN does just that.

The tonal woods are Swamp Ash with a Spalted Maple top and walnut binding, with the neck thru construction being five piece maple with a 24 fret Panga Panga fingerboard.

All of the electronics are Bartolini, with the pickups and 3 band EQ both being the Bartolini MK1.

The Bartolini MK1 Eq has separate controls for bass, mids, and treble, with the treble control also functioning as a tone control in passive mode. There is also an active/passive toggle switch to go between active and passive EQ.

Each string has it’s own individual bridge which provides better string separation and allows for more defined definition and articulation.

The tuners are Hipshot Ultralites with a 20:1 tuning ratio.

I’ve played this model on a few gigs, and it’s a lot of fun to play, sounds great, and I did get a lot of compliments, not only on the looks, but the sound and tone too.
