Review: The Warrior Women of Afro-Peruvian Music

The Warrior Women of Afro-Peruvian Music, featuring Matt Geraghty on bass.

The Warrior Women of Afro-Peruvian Music… Historically, women have been treated as second class citizens in Latin America. This album is the roaring voice of Afro-Peruvian women standing up musically against racism, sexism, and cultural marginalization with pride and power.

In this album, we are treated to a wonderful selection of songs that showcase the talent of these women vocally and on percussion. The music is rich with Latin tempos and patterns that are very familiar and entertaining. The supporting band is a perfect fit for this project and Matt Geraghty lays down a precise, syncopated groove that is essential in Afro Peruvian and Afro-Antillean music.

Kudos to Matt as well for launching and acting as Executive Producer of Just Play. The organization provides this platform and is bringing this amazing music to the rest of the world. The documentary also called “The Warrior Women of Afro-Peruvian Music” was nominated for a Latin Grammy for the 10-part music documentary in the category of Best Long Form Music Video.
