BASS LINES: 5 Ways to Create a Bass Line – Part V

Hello bass players and fans of bass playing!

This month we are going to close with the fifth part on how to create a bass line (See part IV here).

Last time we focused on how to build a rhythm using the chord notes. Now we will look at some examples that use chord tones in conjunction with scales/modes to create a bass groove.

Ex. 1 – A syncopated groove based on C Major (C Ionian mode).

Ex. 2 – An eighth note groove based on A Pentatonic Minor Scale.

Ex. 3 – A busy sixteenth-note groove based on G Mixolydian mode.

The idea is to highlight the notes of the chords by adorning with the passing notes to define the color of the scale/mode.
