Using Scales for Grooving…

Hello bass players and fans of bass playing! In this issue we are going to study the use of scales for grooving.

A very good and interesting way to give more color to your grooves is by using scales. To apply this approach, you must consider the type of chord and how long it lasts. You must also identify the scales that are compatible with the chord and select which one to use.

Ex. 1 – Here we have the arpeggio of the A major chord (A-C#-E).

Ex. 2 – This is the scale that I decided to use to create my groove; the A pentatonic major scale (A-B-C#-E-F#). Of course, I could have chosen the A major scale or the A Lydian mode. But I want the color that the major pentatonic scale gives me for this example.

Ex. 3 – This is the groove I created for the A major chord by using the A major pentatonic scale.

Ex. 4 – This is a variation of the groove. The idea is to make the bassline more interesting.

Ex. 5 – Finally here is the whole groove. The first measure is the main pattern and the second measure is the variation.

This is it! Now you have a better understanding of how to create basslines by using the scales and always considering the color that you want to give to the groove.
