Parallel Minor Keys

Hello bass players and fans of bass playing! In this issue we are going to study the parallel minor keys.

In addition to relative minor keys, there is another relationship between the major and minor scale in which we can compare their structure and key signatures.

Parallel keys are the scales that are built with the same tonic but with different key signatures.

Ex. 1

C Major Scale: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8

C Natural Minor Scale: 1 – 2 – b3 – 4 – 5 – b6 – b7 – 8

By comparing both scales we can see that there are three different notes in the C Minor scale (b3, b6 & b7).

Ex. 2

C Major Scale : C – D – E – F – G – A – B

C Natural Minor Scale: C – D – Eb – F – G – Ab – Bb – C

This is a very good way to study and learn scales. So I invite you to study it in all  tones.
