Vertical Playing vs Horizontal Playing…

Hello bass players and fans of bass playing! In this issue we are going to study how to play vertically and horizontally.

There are many ways to create a bass line, but there are two that are essential for the bassist. These forms of playing are vertical and horizontal.

Playing vertically means playing with arpeggios.

Fig. 1 – A riff based on G7 arpeggio (G-B-D-F).

Playing horizontally means playing with scales or modes.

Fig. 2 – A riff based on the G Mixolydian mode (G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G).

This is a very good way to study and learn riffs and grooves.
