BASS LINES – The Mixolydian b6 Groove!

Mixolydian b6 Groove…

Hello bass players and bass fans! In this issue we are going to study The Mixolydian b6 Groove!
First, taking advantage of the previous lesson… This groove can be identified as a horizontal playing because we will be playing based on the C Mixolydian b6 mode and not on the C7 arpeggio (C-E-G-Bb).

Fig. 1 – The C Mixolydian Mode (C-D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C)

Formula: 1-2-3-4-5-6-b7-8
This mode is best suited for playing over unaltered dominant chords (7th,9th,11th & 13th).

Fig. 2 – The C Mixolydian b6 Mode (C-D-E-F-G-Ab-Bb-C)

Formula: 1-2-3-4-5-b6-b7-8
This one is the V mode of the melodic minor, and it also works well over unaltered dominant chords.

Fig. 3 – The Mixolydian b6 Groove

The groove is played over the C7 chord. As always, we’re going to emphasize the chord tones while the notes left over from the mode become passing notes (colors that define the mode).

See you next month for more full bass attack!
