New Gear: Rapier Saffire Bass

Rapier™ launches the Saffire Bass, a reincarnation of the iconic 1960’s British-built 4-string bass guitar.

The new 4 string short-scale Rapier™ Saffire Bass is the latest addition to the successful series by legendary UK guitar builder and designer Alan Entwistle, based on the original iconic Rapier’s that played a major role in the industry of British built guitars and basses from the 1960s.

Significant tonewood and hardware upgrades for this exciting new model include okoume for the body, chosen specifically for its warmth, depth and high-end clarity, a 4-bolt, Canadian hard rock maple neck with fully adjustable truss rod, a 25 fret (including zero fret) double octave fingerboard with a 31inch (78.74 cm) scale, a four-saddle compensated bridge providing improved intonation all over the fingerboard, whilst open-geared chrome machine heads perform with a simple, effective action for maximum tuning stability.

With a pair of Alan Entwistle EWR64B double-coil pickups, 3-way selector switch, single volume control, global tone control and mid boost control, the new Rapier Saffire Bass is ideal for a host of musical styles, whilst effortlessly delivering the classic Rapier bass voice, heard on a host of early British pop songs.

Looking stunning finished in Fiesta Red, Arctic White and Daphne Blue, this versatile solid-bodied electric bass guitar is visually complimented by the flagship 2-piece, 3-ply tortoise shell scratchplate and re-designed headstock logo.

Gear News: PJB’S Double Four Plus

PJB’S Best Selling Combo Just Got Better With The Release of the Double Four Plus

With increased power and newly added features, the Double Four Plus BG-80 is a worthy successor to PJB’s legendary BG-75 Double Four model. The BG-80 is a 90 Watt single channel bass combo with two four-inch speakers and a 3 band EQ that is perfectly tailored for bass guitar.

Other features include an auxiliary input for iPad/iPod, smartphone or drum machine, stereo headphone-out jack and a line out for recording. Recorded music sounds great through the Bluetooth function (V5.1 with aptX HD). In addition, the Double Four Plus is equipped with a DC input (USB Type-C port) connection which supports a mobile power bank of USB PD (Power Delivery) Protocol. This provides the ultimate in “Tone To Go” and busking possibilities, even where AC power isn’t available.

The BG-80 is ideal for all kinds of basses, and can handle the open B string on a 5-string bass with ease. PJB has applied its cutting-edge experience in designing small speakers to achieve a 4-inch driver with Swiss watch precision. PJB’s R&D facility utilizes the largest an-echoic chamber in the bass guitar amplifier industry as well as the transducer Klippel measurement system with laser technology. The result is PJB’s proprietary “long-thro” 4-inch speakers that have full frequency range up to the highest audio frequencies. Not only does this give greater clarity and transparency to the instrument, but also a high-fidelity sound to any backing track fed into the auxiliary input.

The cabinet is small and portable and built to the same high-quality standards of all PJB cabinets and can achieve a volume that is remarkably loud for its size.

Gear News: Distiller CE Onboard Low Pass Filter

JTEX Electronics and Combinator are pleased to announce an all-new, modular & affordable onboard tone-shaping solution for bassists and guitarists alike – the Distiller CE (Combinator Edition) variable low-pass filter.

Distiller CE is a small, onboard LPF with 3-way resonance control, custom-tuned by Combinator and offered as a revision of JTEX’s stock Distiller circuit – originally based on Alembic’s famous and unique 12dB-per-octave filter.

The CE edition differs in its range of adjustability, operating more as a top-end “tuner” of pickups’ resonant peaks than a full-range filter. Combinator (aka bassist/vocalist/producer Sean Fairchild) uses the Distiller CE in place of a typical preamp’s active treble or passive tone control, variably sculpting his high-end response between 1 and 10 kHz, while adding up to +12dB of peaking boost at the cutoff frequency – allowing for emulation of many different classic and modern pickup voicings.

Similar to the way a passive tone control can create a small peaking boost at its lowest range of adjustment, an active LPF with adjustable peak gain can replicate that behavior anywhere along its range, approximating different pickup personalities and tones. Both the Distiller and Distiller CE feature a 3-way selectable boost control, with settings for flat/no boost, +5dB, and +12dB.
