The Bass Book, A Complete Illustrated History of Bass Guitars by Tony Bacon and Barry Moorhouse (Backbeat Books)

The Bass Book is a beautiful color-illustrated history of the electric bass guitar from the 1950s to the present. I found it to be an easy read, applicable to any bass player that wants to know how the bass has evolved into its present state.

The Fenders dominate this book with some honorable mention of many brands. Personally, I would have liked to read more about the “Other Brands” as none of my own basses are even listed in this tome. Maybe there will be a book titled “The Bass Book…. The other brands”.  (Like the other white meat!)

Nonetheless, this work helps situate many great players through history and their contribution to the evolution of our present-day instrument. Insightful interviews with the musicians and manufacturers expose the thought process behind the scenes.

Lastly, we have a very thorough reference section with specs on sixteen brands. Of course, there is an emphasis on Fender!

This is a book worth reading, especially if you are a Fender fan!
